There is no need to go as far back as Mahabharata or even the World War II. We are going through a war right now. USA has declared a war on terror ever since the events of September 11th. This has lead to war with Afghanistan and then recently with Iraq. Pundits are out there predicting a back lash. Amongst all this rhetoric of war with Iraq and war on terror, there are countries and individuals who oppose the war for one reason or another. They are all termed anti-war. There are others who would like to be called pacifists. They are against any kind of war for any reason.
While all this is going on the media is having a ball. Reporters have been embedded in with the advancing units of the army and marines. They can report up to the minute accounts through the latest of the technologies. While there may be differences in reporting of Al-Zazira TV when compared to CNN, they are both focusing on the war for their own audiences. The center point is fighting. You see the rockets flying and the buildings crumbling. A child has lost his arm while a soldier is lying dead on the ground. The psyche of everyone is centered on the effects of war. There are schools nicknamed hate schools where the future generation is being taught how to have future wars.
Away from all this are some places where no interest or discussion of war goes on. I visited one such place in Rishikesh, the Parmarth Niketan. The day was spent in prayers and meditations. An energizing aarati to Ganga was held after a yagya on the banks of the river in the evening. This, in a way, established a relationship between us and the flowing river. We owe something to our surroundings, be it a tree or be it a river. The morning again was filled with praysers and meditations. There were young children who were learning how to perform prayers and meditation and learning how to be a peaceful individual. They were learning modern education as well as learning these skills. I was so impressed by meeting these individuals. Vivekananda once said, “Give me one hundred individuals and I can change the world for the better.” He must have thought of making these peaceful beings that then can attract the souls of thousands towards shanty (peace).
Many believe that Bhagavadgita is a book which teaches Arjun to fight for sustenance of Dharma and to some extent that is true. But, for me Gita teaches how to be a peaceful individual even in the midst of a war (sthitapragya). I used to wonder how peace is possible in a world which only talks about war. Either we are pro-war or anti war. We teach our children how to face the situations of war today and prepare them for a war or no war of tomorrow.
I was convinced that peace is possible after my visit to Rishikesh. We do not have to have hate-schools. We can have schools where lessons of love are taught. This is not being unrealistic. While war is going on the colleges and universities go on educating their kids, the hospitals go on treating their patients and the musician goes on singing his songs. Why can’t the education of peace go on for our children at the same time? The world needs more people who are at peace with themselves. The new man has to be a meditative man and therein lays possibility of a peaceful world.
