Mantras usually have effects but no meaning. The sounds when repeated over a period of time affect certain centers in the body and have subtle effects. I came across one mantra, however, that is unique. I am truly intrigued with the meaning behind this mantra. It is the Shanti Mantra. Shanti means peace. The first line talks about prosperity and happiness: Sarve bhavantu Sukhinah Let everyone be happy and prosperous. That is the first line of the verse. This is interesting. The talk of peace starts with material matter, the money. Others may argue that you can be happy without money. But, that is not the common meaning. Second line is interesting. You have the money and you are happy. Now you can invest to be well and stay healthy. Second line goes like this: Sarve santu Niramayah Let everyone be free of ailmens You have money and you can afford to maintain a good health. You have a house, a car and a good job. This is the American Dream. The Declaration of independence says that all Americans have: "certain inalienable Rights" including "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." What more can you ask for? The Shanti Mantra, however, asks for more. The third line goes like this: Sarve bhadrani Pashyantu Let everyone have the right vision and right attitude I am happy. I have more than enough. I want everyone around me to have happiness and be prosperous. This is one attitude and one way of thinking. I am happy and I am well. I want to keep my edge. I do not want anyone else to get to where I am. This is another way of thinking. These are the three pillars for Global well being and for individual and world peace. I think that the third line is the most important one in our times. USA is prosperous. It can afford to have good health care for all. Right attitude and right vision is important especially so for people or countries that can influence the world with their prosperity and power. |
